About the District
Mission
Coxsackie-Athens School District will provide a comprehensive education program for all students to compete successfully and contribute to a global society.
Motto
One District, One Mission, One Vision for Every Student
Just nineteen miles south of Albany, the Coxsackie-Athens Central School District offers the beauty and relaxation of rural living in an area that has easy access to the immediate Capital District as well as to New York City to the South and Boston and other intermediate points to the East.
Recreational opportunities abound in this community nestled along
the shores of the Hudson River. For Winter sports enthusiasts, a
forty-five minute drive provides access to the celebrated ski resorts of
southern Greene County!
Coxsackie is an area "on the move" and, as such, is proving attractive
to various new commercial ventures. A new business and technology park
hosts a major distribution center for the Save-a-Lot grocery corporation
as well as a production center for Serta Mattress (soon to be built).
Other new businesses are also emerging in the Coxsackie and Athens area,
which is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for vacation
travelers as well as for those seeking to relocate. A wide variety of
housing, from historic Victorians to contemporary chalets can be found
throughout this 75+ square miles encompassed by the school district.
The Coxsackie-Athens Central School District enrolls approximately 1600
students in grades K-12. Coxsackie Elementary School (Grades K-4),
Coxsackie-Athens Middle School (Grades 5-8) and the High School (Grades
9-12) all share one campus in the Village of Coxsackie. Edward J. Arthur
Elementary School, also a K-4 building, is in the Village of Athens. The
district boasts outstanding facilities all of which were recently
upgraded in a capital project completed in 2000 with the opening of a
new middle school.
Technology is the backbone of much contemporary learning, and the
Coxsackie-Athens Central School District offers a technology
infrastructure which supports many innovative initiatives. In addition
to offering in-school access to various programs in every classroom,
students can work from home through our "virtual lab" on any of our
instructional programs.
Coxsackie-Athens offers a variety of instructional opportunities,
including advanced placement courses in up to nine disciplines, an
environmental science course which literally uses the Hudson River as
its "classroom," a robotics-based middle school technology program, and
the highly competitive New Visions programs for upper level students
seeking a unique opportunity to work in medical, technological,
arts-based, or communications fields in a career-shadowing model that
has been replicated throughout the state. At the outset of the 2007 –
2008 school year, a student from C-A will join approximately 40 of her
peers as a member of the first ninth grade class enrolled at Tech Valley
High School, a regional high school sponsored by the Capital Region and
Questar III B.O.C.E.S., at which students will engage in project – based
learning with real world applications. The district has nearly completed
the mapping of curricula in all disciplines to assure a comprehensive
and coordinated instructional program K-12. With an increasing emphasis
on instruction, staff members have access to professional development
offerings to develop additional skills and to learn new strategies to
help students become more successful. We also offer a comprehensive
extra-curricular program and a broad spectrum of interscholastic sports,
including football. Our lighted tennis courts and our running track are
also attractive community facilities.
Coxsackie-Athens' adult education program ("Community Classroom") offers
comprehensive courses on a wide variety of topics. Recreational
activities, crafts, computers and technology, defensive driving,
ballroom dancing, yoga, and indoor walking are especially popular with
our residents.
We are proud of our district and of our students. Well over 80% of our
graduates attend two and four year colleges, and C-A graduates can be
found at some of the country's most prestigious colleges and
universities. Coxsackie-Athens is definitely "the place to be!"
