“Empowering Students to Reach Personal Success and Responsible Citizenship”

September, 2012

I hope each of you have had a fantastic, fun filled summer spent with family and friends.  The Olympics were enjoyable and inspirational. The pennant races are heating up and my Yankees are slumping but we will start pulling it together soon.

Where did we leave off last year?

Our school target goal last year was to improve student attendance. I wanted to share with you that the number of students with 15 or more unexcused absences was down by 33% and the number of students with 15 or more unexcused tardies was down 13% from the 2010-11 to 2011-12 school year.  Those are some good numbers and we all should be congratulated. Our state assessments scores have been released and can be found at http://www.oms.nysed.gov/press/3-8MathELATestScores.2012.html . Overall we continue to improve as a district despite dwindling budgets and increased state mandates.  Congratulations to the entire Coxsackie-Athens community.

What’s new?

This year will be challenging, in many ways. Procedure wise our Student and Parent handbook has been updated.  Please be sure to take a look at it as there have been many changes. It can be found on the Middle School page of the district web page. The new student management system, eSchoolData is up and running.  Also new this year is the requirement of taking period by period attendance.  Some other things you might notice is the change from letter to numerical period identification, and day 1and 2 will now be either “A” day or “B” day. We also welcome many new faces to the staff for the 2012-13 school year. Lori Grossi- Edwards joins us as a self contained special education teacher.  Diane Loughran comes to us from the High School as a teaching assistant.  Jen Seekamp is the new 6th grade science teacher.  Matt Zabrowski joins us with the title of director of 6-11 student discipline and wellness.  Two familiar faces, Valarie McDermott, and Tina O’Brien are now part time teacher aids. J.P. Hulslander joins our staff as a physical education teacher.  Catherine Heinzinger and Alexis LaMare are 1-1 aides. Joy Smith will be taking over for Pam Jones and her social work duties. Michele Hoffman will be directing the 7th and 8th grade chorus.  Martin Gregoire has joined us as a new STEM teacher. Jamie Tingley will be our new school psychologist taking over for Shauna Maynard.

Where are we going?

This year we have identified two new school wide goals.

  • Increase by 5% the number of students reaching level 3 and 4 on NYS tests compared to 2012.
  • Decrease the number of students failing a course each marking period by 10% compared to the same marking period last year.

The integration of new technology, newly created Math and ELA labs, along with the implantation of a results approach method supported by curriculum development and data evaluation will guide us in reaching our goals.

I hope that this school year brings personal success to every student.  As always do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

David B. Proper
